VW to enter public transport
MUMBAI: Volkswagen is planning to bring its light commercial vehicles to India to tap the growing need for public transport.
Under consideration are VWs minivans and minibuses, which will be imported as completely built units.
The company is currently evaluating the domestic commercial vehicle market and hopes to make a decision in the near future.

Joerg Muller, president, Volkswagen India said, "Internal discussions are being held on the possibility of bringing our commercial vehicle range to India. We are currently studying the structure of the domestic market and will arrive at a decision in the near future."
The company, which is building a plant to manufacture passenger cars in Chakan, had displayed a few of these minivans and buses at the 9th Auto Expo held in New Delhi in January 2008. If VW decides to ride its commercial vehicles in India, it will do so under a separate entity Volkswagen Commercial India.
"The vehicles displayed at the Auto Expo generated a lot of interest and demand, especially from consulates, travel houses and the corporate sector. And therefore, it makes sense for the company to bring them to India," an industry source said.
While Muller declined to talk about the models which will hit Indian roads, industry sources said "Most likely, it would be one of the vehicles displayed in the Auto Expo, if not all of them."
